Your LLC can build its own credit history, separate from yours. It's not magic and it's not instant: it's a 6-to-12-month process with concrete steps. This is the path, in order — check off your progress and the page remembers it.
The principle behind it all: business credit bureaus (Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, Equifax Business) score the company, not the owner. That's why it works without an SSN — if the company is real, consistent and pays on time.
LLC in good standing (annual report current) and an EIN from the IRS. Without an SSN, the EIN is requested with Form SS-4 (by fax or mail; by phone for foreign entities). Without an EIN, nothing that follows exists.
A U.S. business address (registered agent with address service or a virtual office — avoid PO Boxes), a U.S. phone number that answers or forwards, an email on your own domain and a basic website. The golden rule: identical name, address and phone everywhere (bureaus cross-check data; a stray comma creates duplicate files).
Mercury, Relay or similar in the LLC's name. Lenders and fintechs look at bank flow before anything else: regular receipts, stable balance, zero mixing with personal expenses.
It's your company's ID in the commercial credit system. Request it for free at dnb.com (ignore the "expedite" upsells — the free DUNS takes a few days/weeks and works just as well). Check that the data matches step 2 exactly.
The heart of the process: vendors that sell to you on 30-day terms and report your payments to the bureaus (Uline, Quill, Grainger, Summa Office Supplies are the classics). Open 3 to 5, buy things you actually use, and pay before the due date — paying early is what builds a high Paydex.
The goal: Paydex 80+ at D&B (it means "pays on time or early"), and active profiles at Experian Business and Equifax Business. With 3+ accounts reporting on-time payments for a few months, the scores appear on their own.
Corporate fintechs (Brex, Ramp and similar) approve based on your account balance and flow — they don't ask for an SSN or personal history, though they usually require high balances. Alternative: a secured business card with a deposit. Every month of use and full payment reported adds history.
With Paydex 80+, a bank with history and an active card, higher limits, net-60/90 with larger vendors and equipment financing open up. Careful here: many products will ask for a personal guarantee — read before you sign; that's where your personal assets come back into play.
